SANI PASS – HIGHEST PUB IN AFRICA |
The Sani Pass is regarded by some as one of the most spectacular views in South Africa and is an experience not to be missed. This steep, zigzagging pass climbs the face of the Drakensberg escarpment to an altitude of 2,874 meters above sea level.
Walls of sandstone, cascading rivers and hair-raising bends are just some of the highlights as the 4x4 vehicle takes you through the Barrier of Spears and into the Kingdom of Lesotho.
The Sani Pass was originally developed as a bridal path in 1913. The first vehicle negotiated the path in 1948. It is now used for the most part by 4x4 vehicles.
The awe-inspiring Sani Pass climbs the face of the escarpment to an altitude of 2,874 meters and into the “Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho”. This is the gateway to the “Roof of Africa”. En route, you will pass “Blind Man’s Corner”, “Haemorrhoid Hill”, “Whisky Spring”, “Suicide Bend”, “Reverse Corner” and last, but not least “Big Wind Corner”.
The scenery is breathtaking and the tour will reveal the history of the Pass, geology of the mountain and a unique experience with the Basotho shepherds and their animals.
After so much excitement, the highest pub in Africa awaits with a cold beer and a welcome lunch, before heading back, or you might decide to stay and overnight above the clouds.
